My Favorite Books of 2017

Hello Bookworms!

2018 is finally upon us, and I can’t believe just how fast last year flew by. I ended up reading 35 total books in 2017, and the majority of them I really did love. Though I enjoyed almost all of the books I read in 2017, it really wasn’t hard for me to compile my list of favorites, because these are the ones that really stuck out to me, and that I will continue to enjoy for years to come. If I read multiple books in the same series (which is a majority of this list) they will be considered as one spot on my favorites list. There are nine spots on this list, and I will be starting with number nine and working my way down to my favorite book of 2017! After the great year of reading that I had in 2017, I have really high hopes for this new year, and I cannot wait to see what amazing books it has in store for me. Regardless of its place on this list, each and every one of these books I would highly recommend if you are interested in them, because they are all incredibly well written and very enjoyable!

In addition, I gave every single one of the books on this list a 5/5 star rating, and you can check out their individual reviews on this blog as well.

9. Burned/Smoke by Ellen Hopkins

As you will see from this list, many of the books that I read in 2017 were some type of fantasy or science fiction young adult series. This one, however, is one of the few exceptions. I picked up this series because I had been wanting to read some of Ellen Hopkins’ books for a while, and I am extremely glad that I did. These books touch on some heavy topics with an almost poetic writing style. They are easy to fly through, but I promise you won’t forget the message they leave you with. Highly recommend this chilling duology full of both darkness and light.

8. We are Okay by Nina LaCour

This is another book that took me by surprise in 2017, and as I said in my review, it came at a time when I most needed to read it. This book also deals with some heavy topics such as finding yourself, and dealing with anxiety and depression while being away from home and in college for the first time. This book was so relatable and the writing style was extremely beautiful. I definitely think this one deserves its spot on this list.

7. Saga (Volumes 1 and 2) by Brian K. Vaughan

If you would have asked me at the beginning of last year if I thought I would have graphic novels on this list, I would have most likely said no. I really never had any interest in reading graphic novels until I heard all the hype surrounding this series. Though I have only read the first two volumes thus far, I am highly anticipating reading the rest very soon. These are something that you can read in one sitting, and that I will be rereading for a long time. The illustrations are absolutely stunning, and the theme of star crossed lovers is something that I personally always enjoy in novels. In addition, there is some inspiration for this series that was taken from Star Wars which just adds to the reasons why I love it so much. Even if you don’t usually read graphic novels, you NEED to read this series!

6. Cinder/Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

I read the first two novels in the Lunar Chronicles in 2017 and absolutely loved them. These are basically retellings of fairy tales, with a science fiction twist. The idea is so unique, while the characters and the plot are so fun to read about. I cannot wait to continue on with this series this year, and hopefully finish it soon! I will actually be picking up the third novel, Cress, as my next read! Definitely recommend this young adult series!

5. Harry Potter (Books 1 and 2) by J.K. Rowling

I know it seems odd that these books aren’t higher up on this list as it is almost everyone’s favorite series, but I am telling you that the amount of good books on this list is insane. If I could put them all in the number one spot I would, as I love them all equally. I read the first two books of this series in 2017, and will be continuing on with the rest very soon. This is my first time reading this series, so I am trying not to rush through it, but every time I pick up one of these books I am absolutely swept away by the magic of the world, and the amazing cast of characters. I’m pretty sure almost everyone has read this series before me, but even if you have, I recommend giving it another reread!

4. The Raven Boys/The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater

raven boys

When I read the first book in this series in 2017, I was absolutely swept away. I was expecting to enjoy it, but my love for this series and these characters has grown more than I ever would have anticipated. The plots of these books are so unique and the characters are some of my most favorite to read about, and I absolutely cannot wait to continue on with this series because it has quickly become one of my favorites of all time. Please, please, please, check this series out if you haven’t already!

3. Snow Like Ashes/Ice Like Fire by Sara Raasch

snow like ashes

The first book in this series was one of my first reads of 2017, and though I had somewhat forgotten how much I enjoyed it, the second book definitely brought me straight back into the world and all the wonderful feelings I had while reading it. This world is absolutely stunning, and so incredibly unique, and when I am reading this series I cannot put it down. The characters are fantastic. You either love them, or love to hate them, and there are so many twists and turns that you will not see coming. I cannot wait to read the final book in this trilogy this year, but I just know that it will rip my heart out like both books before it. If you are looking for a new fantasy series to read, I highly recommend giving this one a go.

2. The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye

From the bottom of my heart, I still cannot organize my thoughts on this novel, and it has been months since I read it. This one seriously took me by surprise, and had me sobbing literal tears at the end, because that is how much I ended up loving it. This is a duology, which means you only have to dedicate your time to two books, and I absolutely cannot wait to finish this series, but I am also trying to prolong that because I don’t want it to end. The world that this story takes place in is beautifully written, and the plot is so unique, and will leave you turning pages faster than you think. I still do not have enough words to describe how wonderful this book is, you seriously just need to read it. Please.

1. Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy by Cassandra Clare, et al.

shadowhunter academy

This was the last book that I read in 2017, and you can check out my full thoughts on my latest blog post. Of course, this book has to take the cake for my favorite read of 2017, as this is still my favorite series of all time. This series holds so much sentimental value in my heart, and I will cherish it forever. This is a bind-up of ten short stories in between two of the series that make up this world. If you haven’t picked up this series yet, I urge you to give it a try. I will probably be reading these books for a very long time, and I don’t see myself ever not loving them with all my heart.

So that does it for my favorite books of 2017! Let me know down below if you have read any of these books, and also let me know some of your favorite reads of 2017! As always, follow me on Goodreads to keep up with all of my reading updates, and don’t forget to check out my bookstagram account (circesbooksblog). I hope everyone is off to a great start with the new reading year, and I can’t wait to read many more amazing books in 2018! Happy Reading!
